Setting up Tie on Shopify with Klaviyo

Tie identifies the high value shoppers already browsing your site and sends them to your email, SMS, and ad platforms so you can market to them directly.

This is the full walkthrough for a standard Shopify store using Klaviyo. It covers what setup involves, what we need from your team, what Tie handles, and the order to work in.

What setup involves

There are two halves to it.

Getting your traffic into Tie. You connect your domain, which lets Tie serve its tracking first party from your own domain rather than from an outside host. Once that is verified, the Tie Pixel goes on your store. On standard Shopify we install it for you.

Getting Tie's data back out to your tools. You connect Klaviyo, then Meta Ads and Google Ads, and Tie sends identified shoppers and server side conversions to each.

Your side of it is a set of connections and access grants. There is no tracking code for your developers to write on Shopify.

Tie's tracking is set up per domain. If your store runs on more than one domain, or your checkout sits on a different domain from your storefront, tell your Tie contact before you start so we can scope it with you.

Everything you do happens in your Integration Setup page or in your own Shopify and Klaviyo admin.

1. Connect your domain

This is the one to start first, because the Tie Pixel cannot be generated until your domain is connected.

Those records delegate a subdomain of your own domain to Tie, and that delegation is what lets us serve the tracking from your domain rather than from an outside host. It is also why this step gates the rest, because until the records are live there is no pixel to install.

Your Connect Domain page shows the NS values for your account. Add them at your DNS provider on the zone host, alongside your existing records. Set the TTL as low as your provider allows, then come back to the same page and click Check Verification Status.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Tie creates the tracking subdomain on our side. You are not creating a subdomain, you are pointing one at us.

  • The values are specific to your account, so use the ones on your own page rather than any you have seen elsewhere.

  • Adding these records does not affect your live site, your email, or your existing DNS.

  • Some providers will not let you add NS records at all, which is common and not a problem. Tell your Tie contact and we will set you up a different way.

  • This step usually belongs to whoever manages your DNS, which is often a developer or an outside agency rather than the marketing team. If that is not you, forward this section to them and they will have everything they need.

Verification is not instant, since DNS changes take time to propagate. There is nothing to watch. Start it, then work the rest of this list in parallel.

Step by step: connect your domain. If verification does not pass, start here.

2. Give Tie access to your Shopify store

Send your Tie contact your store URL and your four digit collaborator request code, and we send an access request from our side. It lands in your pending invites, with the access we need already included, so there is nothing for you to select.

The request comes from Revenue Roll Inc, which is Tie's legal name, so that is what Shopify shows. Approve it under Settings, then Users and permissions, then Collaborators.

That access is what lets us install and validate your tracking. It is read only apart from the pixel itself, and we do not change your store's design or layout.

3. Connect your Shopify store

Tie reads your order history so it can tell you which of the shoppers it identifies actually bought, and what they bought. That comes from a small read only app on your store. You do not build it. Tie builds it for your store, and you install it with one click.

On your Integration Setup page, enter your Shopify store URL. Either form works, yourbrand.myshopify.com or admin.shopify.com/store/yourbrand. Tie builds the app on our side, which takes a moment. Then click Connect Shopify and follow Shopify's prompts to install it.

Shopify shows you what the app can read before you approve it. It is customers, orders, full order history, and draft orders, all read only. It cannot change anything in your store, and it has no access to your theme, your other apps, or your customers' payment details.

There is no app to create, no permissions to type in, and no keys to send us. The Shopify step on your setup page turns to Connected on its own once the install lands.

4. The Tie Pixel goes on your store

Once your domain is verified and we have collaborator access, Tie installs the Tie Pixel for you. It is two pieces, a small loader in your theme and a Customer Events pixel in your Shopify admin that listens for product views, add to carts, and checkouts.

Nothing here needs your developers. On Shopify, the loader and the Customer Events pixel together capture everything Tie needs, so there is no data layer for your team to build.

If you would rather install it yourself, or your theme is managed in a code repository so a direct edit would be overwritten on your next deploy, tell your Tie contact. We send you both scripts and your team adds them.

5. Connect Klaviyo

Three things, and none of them wait on DNS. You can do this today.

  • ☐ Connect Klaviyo from your Integration Setup page. It is a one click authorization.

  • ☐ Add Tie as a Manager in Klaviyo. Under Settings, then Account, then Users, grant Manager level access to [email protected] and to your Customer Success Manager's email address. Manager level matters, since a lower level leaves the team unable to do the work.

  • ☐ Send us a private API key. In Klaviyo, create a private API key named backupconnection with the Full Access Key access level, and send it to your Tie contact securely. We do not need your public key.

The connection and the API key are separate things and we need both. The connection carries your data, and the key is what our team uses to complete the setup behind it.

6. Connect Meta Ads and Google Ads

These come last, and deliberately so. Both connect from your Integration Setup page, but neither can be connected until your domain is verified and the Tie Pixel is live. Your Tie contact tells you when they are ready, so there is nothing to do here until you hear from us.

Sending us credentials safely

The only credential on this list is your Klaviyo private API key, and it is sensitive. Your Klaviyo public key is not, and can be sent normally. Shopify needs no keys at all, since the app install replaces them.

Send the private key with a single use secret link, which is destroyed the moment we open it. If your team already has a tool for this, or a password manager with a share link, use that. If you have nothing, other customers have used a free service like onetimesecret.com. That is not a tool we are recommending, just one that others have used.

The link itself is safe to send over email or Slack. The credential on its own is not, so please do not paste it into an email or a channel.

What Tie does on our side

While you work through the list, we provision your tracking environment, generate and install the Tie Pixel, and complete the server side configuration that connects everything you have granted us. When it is done we confirm your data is flowing correctly before we call you live, and your Tie contact tells you when that happens.

You will also be introduced to your dedicated Customer Success Manager, who is your ongoing contact once you are live.

The order to work in

  • ☐ Start your domain connection today. Everything on the tracking side waits on it, and it is the one step with a clock on it that is not yours.

  • ☐ In parallel, do the Shopify pieces and Klaviyo. None of them depend on DNS.

  • ☐ Leave Meta and Google until we tell you they are ready.

Anything that is not clear, ask your Tie contact. It is a short list, and we would rather answer a question than have you guess at it.

Did this answer your question?
