If your Tie account started before 24 September 2026, Tie connects to your Shopify store through a small read-only app that lives in your own store. If that app was removed, or your Tie contact asked you to reinstall it, this guide walks you through it. It takes about five minutes, and if you'd rather do it together, your Tie contact is happy to jump on a quick call and walk through it with you.
Started with Tie after 24 September 2026? You connect with our one-click app instead. See Connect your Shopify store to Tie.
Step 1. Check whether the app is still in your store
In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Apps and look for the Tie app in your installed apps (usually named Tie Integration App).
If it's there, you don't need to rebuild anything. Let your Tie contact know and we'll confirm on our side that your Tie Pixel and tracking script are current.
If it's not there, continue to Step 2.
Step 2. Create the app in your own store's account
Build the app while signed in to your store's own Shopify account. If it's created inside an agency's or outside developer's Shopify account instead, it will look connected but Tie won't receive any of your data. If an agency or developer is doing this for you, have them do it from inside your store's account.
2a. On that same Settings → Apps page, click Develop apps in the top right, then click Build apps in Dev Dashboard. This opens your Dev Dashboard, Shopify's developer area.
2b. Click Create app, then choose Create app manually (not the Shopify CLI option). Name the app Tie Integration App.
2c. Replace the App URL with the address below and leave Allowed redirection URL(s) blank. Neither is used, because Tie connects with a Client ID and secret rather than a login flow.
https://shopify.dev/apps/default-app-home
2d. Under API access, paste this exact list into the Scopes field. All four are read-only.
read_customers,read_orders,read_draft_orders,read_all_orders
Getting an error on read_all_orders? Some stores won't accept it while the app is first being created and show "Contains invalid scopes: read_all_orders". If that happens, remove it, then create and release the app with the other three (2e). Then on Overview click New version, add read_all_orders back to Scopes and click Release at the bottom of the page. Now continue with 2f. If it's still refused, install with the other three and let your Tie contact know.
2e. Click Create app in the top right, then Release on the "Release version" popup. No version name or description is needed.
2f. In the left nav, open Tie Integration App → Overview, then click Install app in the top right. Approve it in the window that opens in your store by clicking Install. An "app has not been reviewed" warning is expected for a custom app.
Install app says the app developer needs to select a distribution method first? Here's the fix, then come back to 2g.
2g. Back in the Dev Dashboard, refresh the page. You should now see 1 install. If you don't, refresh once more or let us know.
Step 3. Send Tie your Client ID and secret
In the Dev Dashboard, open Settings → Credentials and send the Client ID and secret to your Tie contact. Please use a single-use secret link rather than a plain email or your shared Slack channel. How to send Tie your credentials securely covers the options.
That's it. We'll confirm the connection and the permissions on our side and let you know once everything checks out.
If Install app asks for a distribution method
If Install app shows "This app can't be installed yet, the app developer needs to select a distribution method first," the app just needs a distribution method set. This is common and nothing is broken.
On the Overview page, find the Distribution card and click Select distribution method (it may open in a new tab). Choose Custom distribution (not Public distribution), click Select and confirm. This choice can't be undone.
Enter your store's .myshopify.com domain and untick "Allow multi-store install for one Plus organization", which starts ticked, unless you're installing across several Plus stores. Click Generate link, confirm, and use that link to install the app.
Once it's installed, go back to 2g.
If you change the scopes later
Saving a new scope list doesn't apply it on its own. On Overview, create a new version with the updated scopes, Release it, then reinstall the app so the new permissions attach. Your Client ID and secret stay the same, so there's nothing new to send.
What each scope lets Tie read
Scope | What it lets Tie read |
Your orders, so captured events can be matched to real orders
Customer records, so captured events can be matched to real customers
Draft orders
Your full order history, including orders older than the last 60 days
Why Tie needs this
The Tie Pixel captures what happens on your storefront. This app lets Tie confirm those events match your real orders and customers, which is how we keep your reporting accurate and your integrations working. Everything it can do is read-only, and Tie never changes anything in your store through it.
